How to Book Consistent Freelance Clients

When I first started my business, my marketing strategy was kind of like throwing spaghetti at a wall — I would just throw stuff out there and see what stuck. With a little bit of luck, and a whole lot of trial and error, it took me two years to match my income from my corporate job and another two to hit that coveted six-figure mark.

Here’s a secret I learned along the way: Booking clients doesn't have to be hard, but it does require a strategy.

At the beginning, I was kind of just hoping that clients would stumble across my business one way or another. I didn’t really want to go out and find them, I wanted them to come to me.

The thing was, I didn’t have any sort of strategy in place that would enable that to happen. Not at first, anyways. So today I’m going to share with you the two-part marketing strategy that I’ve used to book consistent freelance clients and grow my business!

The thing about booking clients is that it doesn't have to be hard, but it does require a strategy. Here’s how I was able to book consistent freelance clients and hit that coveted six-figure mark!

Short-Term Traffic Drivers

The first thing you need to know about are short-term traffic drivers. Essentially, these are things that you can do that will get your brand in front of the most eyeballs as soon as possible.

Common short-term traffic drivers include:

  • Networking events

  • Instagram takeovers

  • Guest presentations

  • Facebook Live videos

  • Podcast interviews

Personally, my superpower is connecting with people one-on-one. So my short-term traffic driver was setting up a really intentional and strategic referral system, as well as creating strong relationships with strategic partners that would benefit from sending me work.

Long-Term Traffic Drivers

Long-term traffic drivers, on the other hand, are things that require consistent effort over a long period of time. Typically, these things will create more value the longer they exist and the more you continue pouring effort into them. Additionally, these long-term efforts are really the things that will showcase your expertise and position you as an expert with your target audience.

Examples of long-term traffic drivers include:

  • Blogs

  • Podcasts

  • YouTube channels

  • Social media platforms

  • Email marketing

For me, my most effective long-term traffic driver is blogging. I have evergreen blog posts from five years ago that are still sending me traffic! With long-term drivers, consistency is key. So I still create new blog content monthly, which also helps with my SEO and my ranking on Google.

I also invested a lot of time and energy into my Pinterest strategy when I was first starting out, and I’ve booked several clients over the years who have found me on the platform.

At the end of the day, it’s all about figuring out what works best for you!
